Case Study: Log Home (Caraquet, NB)

Exterior_New_Brunswick_3.jpgBuilt in the summer of 2006, this stunningly beautiful 3,000 sq. ft. log home is located on the waterfront of Bay de Chaleur in Caraquet, New Brunswick.

The homeowners, Ron and Ginette, had initially intended for the home to be just a summer getaway – but they soon decided to put their condo in Stoney Creek, Ontario up for sale and move in on a permanent basis after falling in love with the gorgeous, handcrafted log home.

“It’s a great feeling to live in a log home,” says Ron. “It’s definitely different than living in a condo, but it’s a good type of different. It’s large, it’s warm, it’s beautiful … it’s just a great log home.”

Exceptional Quality and Workmanship

“I was really impressed by Dan’s workmanship during each stage of the process,” Ron says. “We live right on the waterfront, and there is a lot of wind and salt water in the air, and nothing has hurt the log home. It’s very well built and doesn’t require a lot of maintenance on our part.”

Remarkable Cathedral Ceilings

New-Brunswick-Great-Room-3.jpgRon’s favourite feature of the home? Although there are so many beautiful aspects to the log home, he really appreciates its tall cathedral ceilings and the overall openness of the kitchen and great room.

“We went high-end all the way, and it was definitely worth it,” he says. “We are very happy with the results.”

Incredible Energy Efficiency

Built using 16” diameter Eastern White Pine Logs and heated using a ground source heat pump and wood burning fireplace, this log home is very energy efficient. How efficient? Ron says that his annual heating, cooling, and hydro costs are just $2,600 – an average of $216 per month!

“We designed it to be energy efficient right from the start, building our foundation with foam Eco-Block panels,” Ron says. “Combined with the thickness of the log home construction, it’s always very warm in the winter and doesn’t cost a lot of money to heat, which is just great.”
