Course Descriptions and Overall Course Objectives

Introduction to Logs

Learn the background of log building, terminology, and the building process so that you can make informed decisions during log home design and while having your log home built. Learn the basic skills to produce log furniture and small log structures.

  • Introduction to log building
  • Building, history, vocabulary, materials, tools, safety and maintenance.  
  • Learn basic skills of scribing, planning, notching, and finishing.
  • Build and take home a piece of Log Furniture (Picnic Table, Chairs, etc)

Apprentice Program

Learn all the skills needed to safely plan and build a handcrafted one-story log home.  Acquire extensive knowledge about log building projects and the log building industry needed to pursue a career in log building.

  • Introduction to log structure planning & building
  • Education on project safety
  • Learn advanced skills of scribing, planning, notching, and finishing.
  • Learn techniques for installing windows, roofs, floors.
  • Learn dismantle and assembly process
  • Build a one story log building

Crafstmen Program

Learn the advanced techniques necessary to work on large-scale projects.  Receive in-depth tutoring on all aspects of log home building, from design, planning, building, dismantling, and assembly. This course is ideal for any one intending on building a large scale log project, or becoming a true master log builder in the industry.

  • Introduction to multi-stage log structure engineering, planning & building
  • Learn expert skills in various construction styles Scandinavian / scribe fit, hand hewn, dovetail, piece-en-piece, chinked, post and beam, and timber frame.
  • Scribed wall construction, complex log floor structure, porch, log and stair railing systems, and finishing details, settling, roofs floors, windows
  • Learn techniques for install windows, roofs, and floors
  • Learn dismantle and assembly process
  • Build a 1400 square foot building
